Webreakstuff (nice name) have  a good explanation of ethnography and its benefits over testing in a lab.

I agree, why test people in a lab? People feel more comfortable in their normal environment. However, it gets very expensive to do ethnography all the time and you are limited to testing people ‘near’ you, so that is why I use remote testing tools to study website usability! You test with people in their own environment, and look over their shoulder, in a virtual way…
